Bonding

Natural teeth often have small imperfections that can mar an otherwise attractive smile. Dental bonding can create a more cosmetically perfect appearance, hiding any small chips, cracks or stained teeth. Treatment is also useful for hiding teeth that may be too small or worn or closing or minimizing spaces between teeth.

Bonding is a minimally invasive treatment that can help perfect a smile while preserving all or most of your original tooth structure. We offer two bonding treatments, either using composite resin bonding or porcelain veneers.

Different Types

Composite Resin Bonding

Composite resin is applied directly to the front surface of a tooth. Our dentist will choose the exact shade of composite resin, often combining several shades to achieve the perfect colour. The composite is applied directly to prepared tooth surfaces, where it is hardened using a special light before it is carefully shaped and polished to create a natural lustre. Composite resin bonding can often be completed in a single treatment and is an especially good choice if you only have one or two teeth requiring modification.

While composite resin is hard-wearing, it isn’t completely stain-resistant, so you may need to replace these restorations after several years, depending on your lifestyle habits.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain made to fit precisely over a tooth’s front surface. They are stain-resistant and last longer than composite resin restorations, but they do cost more. With porcelain veneers, it’s usually necessary to remove a small amount of tooth structure, typically 0.5 mm, to ensure that once fitted, your veneers do not feel or look too bulky.

Teeth are prepared using a local anesthetic to make sure you feel comfortable during this part of the treatment. Afterwards, we take a detailed dental impression, which is sent to our dental laboratory. They use the impression to custom make your veneers to our exact design and specifications. In the meantime, we protect your teeth with temporary veneers until your new veneers are ready. When you return, we remove the temporary veneers and try in your porcelain veneers, ensuring they fit properly and that you are entirely happy with their appearance before bonding them onto your teeth.

If you are interested in dental bonding, we can discuss your options in more depth during your consultation. Both treatments provide wonderful results and can be used with other procedures like teeth whitening to help create a more cosmetically attractive smile.
