When Would I Need Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is necessary when the inner part of the tooth, called the dental pulp, dies or becomes infected. The dental pulp consists of the tooth nerve, connective tissues and blood vessels and extends from the centre of the tooth into the root canals in the tooth roots. An infection can occur if a tooth is cracked, has significant tooth decay that has penetrated the dental pulp, or has become damaged because of trauma, allowing infection-causing bacteria to enter inside the tooth. 

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a process to remove the infected dental pulp and the tissues in the root canals. Dr. Harrington always uses an operating microscope during endodontic treatment to ensure all the infected tissues are removed thoroughly. Afterwards, we disinfect the cavity and seal the tooth before restoring it, usually with a dental crown. Contrary to belief, root canal treatment should not feel painful. We ensure your tooth is completely numb before treatment. However, an infected tooth can be extremely painful, and after root canal therapy, you can expect to feel much more comfortable, although it may take a few days for your tooth to settle down.

Is Root Canal Treatment Always the Best Option?

While we prefer to preserve your natural teeth, it isn’t always possible to save a severely infected tooth and where the infection may have spread beyond the tooth root. Sometimes it can be better to remove the tooth to help eliminate the infection and to discuss other ways of replacing it, perhaps with a dental implant. 

If we feel there is only a slim chance that we could save a tooth with root canal therapy, we will discuss this with you, explaining all possible treatment options, the associated costs and time required and the chance of success.
