Microdentistry

Microdentistry uses a surgical microscope to magnify a specific area of the mouth, allowing us to practice more minimally invasive, conservative and precise dentistry. Using the microscope helps to minimize tooth and tissue loss.

What are the benefits of microdentistry?

Our principal dentist Dr. Roger Harrington regards his surgical microscope as a very important piece of equipment. The benefits of using variable magnification include a greater degree of precision because of improved vision and better light. Using a microscope can identify small signs of infection or disease that might later require treatment or closer monitoring. When used with a dental laser, microdentistry helps to provide a better and very predictable outcome.

When is Microdentistry Used?

Microdentistry can be used in a wide range of treatments and procedures. It helps to ensure treatments are more accurate and is invaluable when gathering documentation for dental insurance claims. The enhanced magnification clearly shows areas of concern and helps to justify recommended treatments covered by dental insurance.

Procedures where we may use a surgical microscope include placing dental fillings or crowns or performing other complex dentistry procedures such as dental implants, Root canals, veneers or dental implants. A surgical microscope is very useful when treating tooth decay and during root canal therapy.

Tooth Decay

We can use microdentistry to treat tooth decay as the improved magnification is extremely useful, allowing Dr. Harrington to remove only the decayed portion of a tooth, leaving healthy tooth structure intact. It also allows our dentist to shape the cavity properly, as a well-designed cavity can improve the quality and longevity of the filling. Using a surgical microscope to place a dental filling helps ensure the margins or edges of the filling are precisely aligned, so the cavity is properly sealed and preventing further infection.

Root Canal Therapy

Microdentistry is especially useful for treating severely infected teeth that require root canal therapy or an endodontic procedure. The enhanced magnification allows Dr. Harrington to detect cracks, locate “extra” canals, and ensure the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and properly shaped before the tooth is restored.

Using a surgical microscope means any tiny flaw is easy to see, which is a good thing, allowing Dr. Harrington to provide work that is more precise and, therefore, less invasive.
