Both crowns and bridges are non-removable; they are cemented onto your natural teeth and are made from natural-looking ceramic materials. Crowns and bridges can only be removed by a dentist.

When Would I Need a Crown?

We recommend a crown if a tooth is severely damaged due to decay or trauma or has received root canal therapy. When a tooth is missing a significant portion of its original structure, an ordinary filling is not strong enough to repair it, leaving the tooth at risk of breaking or crumbling when you bite or chew food. 

A beautiful, well-designed crown can cosmetically improve the appearance of a smile. The crown restores the tooth’s appearance and strength so you can smile, talk and eat confidently, protecting and preserving the tooth underneath and preventing further damage or infection. 

We often use crowns as engineering devices. A crown can provide essential support for a fixed bridge or will restore a collapsed bite. If you lose a tooth entirely, we can replace it with a dental implant, covering the implant with a crown.

When Would I Need a Bridge?

Bridges are a proven solution for replacing missing teeth. If you lose a tooth, it is important to replace it as your teeth are designed to work together, and even a single missing tooth can negatively affect dental health. A fixed dental bridge prevents existing teeth from shifting towards the gap and ensures the stresses created when you bite and chew food are spread evenly, preventing excessive wear and tear on other teeth. 

We can also use dental implants to support a fixed bridge, where the adjacent teeth are not strong enough or are missing entirely. 

Traditional crowns and bridges typically last seven years or more with good dental care. Implant restorations last longer, up to twenty years, but do cost more initially.
