Periodontics

Here at Winnipeg Street Dental, we much prefer to prevent dental disease and offer a range of services to help you and your family maintain good oral health more easily. Preventative treatments include basic periodontal services with an emphasis on dental hygiene visits.

Helping to minimize gum disease

We thoroughly recommend our patients visit us regularly for professional dental cleanings. Most people will need biannual visits. Our hygiene team is extremely gentle when cleaning patients’ teeth. If you have particularly sensitive teeth and gums, we can use a local anesthetic to make sure you feel comfortable during your treatment. We also offer treatments for desensitizing more sensitive teeth.

Why Are Dental Hygiene Visits So Important?

Most people have a good oral care routine that includes twice-daily brushing and once-a-day flossing, but even the best routine will not remove all dental plaque. Dental plaque is a sticky biofilm containing harmful bacteria and will harden into calculus or tartar within just a couple of days unless thoroughly removed.

Calculus is so hard it can only be removed professionally during your dental cleaning. It’s an important treatment because the bacteria in dental plaque and calculus produce harmful toxins that can soon inflame your gums, beginning the process of gum disease (periodontal disease).

As gum disease progresses, it can affect other structures around your teeth that include your jawbone. By monitoring your gum health regularly, we can soon detect the first signs of gum disease at a stage when it is entirely reversible. Otherwise, gum disease can potentially affect general health.

How Could Gum Disease Affect General Health?

Extensive clinical research has shown a connection between chronic gum inflammation caused by periodontal disease and general health. Advanced periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and stroke.

Helping You Maintain Healthy Gums and Strong Teeth

While gum disease is a common problem, it is preventable with ongoing professional and home dental care. When you see us regularly for dental hygiene treatments, we can also review your home oral care routine, helping you to brush and floss more thoroughly every day. You only need to spend a few minutes each day caring for your teeth and gums to maintain a healthy mouth.

What If I Have Advanced Gum Disease?

If you have advanced gum disease, then we offer some surgical procedures to treat this condition. Otherwise, we will refer you to a trusted local periodontist who we know will provide excellent dental care. We can refer you to Kelowna, too, if this option is more convenient.
