Sedation
Sedation dentistry is the use of sedatives to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during your treatment. The level of sedation provided can be customized to suit your requirements.
Dental fear and anxiety are quite common. While our experienced dental team is gentle, caring and compassionate, we recognize that sometimes this isn’t quite enough and may suggest dental sedation. We firmly believe that good dentistry should not be painful or scary and have considerable experience in helping patients overcome these fears. Sedation dentistry is just one tool we can use to help you.

When to Consider Sedation Dentistry?
It is worth considering sedation dentistry if you feel at all anxious about receiving dental care or if you have been actively avoiding dental treatment because of deep-seated fears. Sedation dentistry is also useful for anyone needing lengthier or more complicated treatment. Using sedation dentistry can allow us to complete more treatments during a single appointment while still ensuring you feel comfortable. People with a strong gag reflex may also benefit from sedation, as well as patients with more complex needs and who would find it difficult to remain still comfortably during treatment.
What to Expect When You Have Sedation Dentistry?
Winnipeg Street Dental uses oral sedatives; you are given a pill to take shortly before treatment. It only takes a short while to take effect, by which time you will feel much more relaxed and anxiety-free. You might feel so relaxed that you fall asleep. We can adjust the sedation level from relatively light for people only mildly anxious to more moderate for those with a higher level of dental anxiety or who need a longer appointment. Once your treatment is completed, we will keep you with us for a short while just to make sure you are completely recovered before you are free to go home. You will need someone to take you home as you cannot drive.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
We will review your medical history carefully before recommending this treatment, as your safety is always our top priority. You are monitored continuously during your treatment.
If you need a deeper level of sedation than can be provided by oral sedatives, we will refer you to a dental anesthetist for intravenous sedation.
